Tourism

Health accounts for almost 10% of Caloundra City’s labour force, making it the third largest industry in terms of employment in the region.

The City’s most prominent agricultural sectors are dairy farming, pineapple farming, poultry and nurseries.

The 2001 ABS Census showed agriculture, forestry and fishing industries account for 5.7% of Caloundra City’s employment. Education accounted for 7%.

According to the projections, by 2026 Caloundra City will have an estimated resident population of 162,500. From 2004 to 2026 this will require 34,750 new dwellings.

These projections also highlight that during the period 2016-2026, Caloundra City will be accommodating a greater proportion of the 424,000 people expected to reside on the Sunshine Coast by 2026.

 Lifeguard Service

To help ensure the safety of all beachgoers, Caloundra City Council provides a professional lifeguard service 365 days of the year.

Council lifeguards work closely with Queensland Surf Life Saving and Royal Lifesaving Society of Queensland volunteers to provide safe swimming areas.

Ballinger Beach
Located north of Dicky Beach, the area was named in the 1960’s after early settler John Ballinger who selected land south of Lake Currimundi.

He was the first permanent resident in the area now known as Caloundra.

Ballinger raised sheep on his selection, and a hill where the sheep used to sleep was named Battery Hill. The area was fortified against an expected Russian invasion in the mid-1880s.

Bokarina
The name means ‘middle’. It was named by Kawana Estates, the developers of the area, and was also known during the early 1970’s as Shang-ri-la.

Bulcock Beach
The beach was named after Robert Bulcock, a Brisbane politician. He bought 277 acres of land in 1875, including the town area of present day Caloundra.

Bulcock and his family settled permanently in 1885, building his house, 'The Homestead', in 1878 overlooking Happy Valley.Currimundi
The area was named by Sir Leslie Wilson who built his holiday home, ‘Currimundi House’.

Sir Leslie adapted the local Aboriginal name for the area, which early local settlers also used, Garamandah or Girramundi, meaning Place of Flying Foxes.

Dicky Beach
The beach was named after the ship, the SS Dicky, which ran aground during heavy seas on February 4, 1893. It was re-floated, but again, heavy seas turned the ship about and back onto the sand where it remains to this day.

Golden Beach
This area was granted to well known explorer William Landsborough in 1881. He called his property 'Loch Lamerough'.
Happy Valley
It's thought that this was a local term used by Robert Bulcock whose home overlooked the area.

Kawana (Buddina) Beach
This means wild flowers, or just flowers.

Kings Beach
Kings Beach was named after the King family, the first residents in the area. After living at Moffat Head in James Moffat’s home for a while, they moved to the Kings Beach area in 1893.

There, the family opened a guesthouse (the forerunner to King’s Grand Central) in a house which was moved from Campbellville on Coochin Creek by William Westaway.

The property was once owned by James Campbell and was known as the Bar House. It was moved from Campbellville after the Campbell family relocated their saw milling business to Brisbane in 1890. This occurred after the railway was put through to Mellum Creek, Landsborough. This same building was later run as a guesthouse by Mr Cannon.

Allan King built the Grand Central Guest House at Kings Beach in about 1918. The Kings Beach Tavern rear carpark now stands on this site.

Moffat Beach
This beach was named after James C. Moffat, a chemist from Brisbane, who established a holiday house on Moffat Head in 1883.In about 1887, Moffat formed a land syndicate, and after a small sale, the balance of the land was raffled amongst the members of the syndicate with areas going in proportion to the individual capital invested. The highest point of the headland overlooking the ocean was the most desired portion to win. It was won by Moffat.


Shelly Beach
It’s thought this area was named after the enormous number of shells which are deposited along the shoreline.

Tom Maloney collected shell grit from the beach and transported it in a buckboard drawn by two horses, and took it to Brisbane via the ‘Kauri’ - the Maloney brother’s boat - and it was then sold to poultry suppliers.

Wurtulla Beach
Wurtulla means southward and was named by Kawana Estates employees in the early 1970s.
