Cystic Fibrosis Fast Facts
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that affects a number of organs in the body (especially the lungs and pancreas) by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus, making it difficult to breathe and swallow.
CF is the most common life threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children.
1 in 25 people in Australia are genetic carriers for CF, usually without knowing it! That’s about 1 million people – or approximately 10 AFL Grand Final Crowds.
If two carriers have a child, the baby has a 1 in 4 chance of having CF.
People living with CF need up to 40 tablets every day as well as physiotherapy and a special diet to maintain a “normal” life.
Since 1998, L.J. Hooker offices have helped to raise over $2 million for research into finding a cure for CF.
With our help researchers have come a long way, but there is still no cure.
The predicted median age of survival for CF sufferers is 36.5 years.
65 Roses Day
This day raises awareness of CF and much needed funds for research and support services for young people living with CF and their families. The day’s name is derived from the story of a little boy who had a sister with CF but could not pronounce Cystic Fibrosis and instead called it 65 Roses.
May is CF Awareness month. A variety of events will be held throughout the month of May including a national awareness campaign through various media channels with 65 Roses Day Ambassador – Scott Draper.
