Cooma Locality Guide

Cooma, 420 km south west of Sydney and 114 km south of Canberra, is the gateway to the Snowy Mountains.
The town is a mixture of local grazing families and descendants of the thousands of European migrants who came to Australia to work on the Snowy River Hydro-Electric Scheme.
’Coombah’ is an Aboriginal word meaning either ’big lake’, ’treeless plain’ or ’swamp’.
Squatters came to the area as early as 1827 and the town has been the ’Heart of the Monaro’ ever since.
In 1951, the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority relocated from Sydney to Cooma, leading to the establishment of a township of over 6,000 people.
