Dubbo Locality Guide
Dubbo is the capital of the central west and a major centre 420 km from Sydney on the intersection of the Newell and the Mitchell Highways on the Macquarie River.
First visited by John Oxley in 1818, the region was successfully settled in the 1830’s by Robert Dulhunty.
The meaning of ’Dubbo’ is unclear but is thought to be Aboriginal for either ’red earth’, ’foggy’, ’head covering’ or ’possum fur head covering’.
It is a major growth area being a centre for business, retail, medical and services for the Orana Region as well… more
