Although officially surveyed in 1835, it was the arrival of the paddle wheel steamer that turned Raymond Terrace into a river port linked directly to Sydney.
Today Raymond Terrace is close enough,to the Newcastle CBD to be considered a northern satellite suburb.
It is also the administrative, business and educational centre of the Port Stephens Shire.
