Visitors Centre

The local Aboriginal people first encountered white man in the person of James Morrill, who was shipwrecked just to the north of the eventual town in 1846.Captain Henry Daniel Sinclair investigated Port Denison in 1859.Named after the first Governor of Queensland, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the town of Bowen was soon founded in 1861.With its fine natural port, it was to be the trading and administrative centre of North Queensland. Politics and influence saw that role move elsewhere. The wide streets in the town are a vestige of the important roles the founding fathers had in mind

The high white stacks of salt, visible from the main road on nearing the town, are the result of the water evaporating from the saltwater ponds.

Bowen boasts some of the best beaches in Queensland – all within minutes of the Post Office.
By far the best known is beautiful Horseshoe Bay with its sandy beach surrounded by large granite outcrops It is the town’s best known beach and the most photographed. It has a paved parking area and café/licensed restaurant and an abundance of wild-life which can often be seen wandering around the area. Horseshoe Bay is a popular swimming spot. Tucked away among the rocks on the left-hand side of Horseshoe Bay is Coral Bay, Bowen’s “dress optional” beach, for those who like that sort of thing.
