Location Description
The European history of Cessnock, in the Hunter Valley, began with the discovery of coal at the turn of 20th century.
Although coal is still important to the town's economy, it's now tourists coming to sample the local wine who are ensuring the town's future prosperity.
Cessnock is 150 km north of Sydney with a population of around 17,000 who enjoy an annual average maximum temperature of 24.6 degrees and a minimum of 11.1.

Attractions
Around the vineyards there are a number of towns, each with their own history.
These include Branxton, Greta, Kurri Kurri and Wollombi and towns like Pelaw Main and Abernethy that reflect a strong Welsh mining heritage.
Buildings were often built using convict labour and the results of their work can still be seen today in the courthouses, police stations and post offices.
There are more than 50 wineries in the Lower Hunter and at least 7 wineries in the Upper Hunter.
Many of the wines they produce are available only at the 'cellar door'.
