New hospital to boost Sunshine Coast health services

July 19, 2012

Buying a property is not only one of the largest financial commitments you will ever make, it is one that involves a multitude of considerations.

Whether it is your first home or an investment property, the area you buy into will be largely determined by the region's quality and access to amenities, schooling and public transport.

Those looking to buy a dwelling in Queensland may be interested in the development of a new Sunshine Coast hospital - boosting health services in the region.

State premier Campbell Newman announced yesterday (July 18) that Exemplar Health had been awarded the contract to design, build and finance the new tertiary teaching Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).

He commented: "When its doors open in 2016, SCUH will become the first major new, not replacement, hospital built in Australia for more than 20 years."

Accommodating more than 700 beds and employing 5,000 staff by 2021, the new facility will become the centrepiece of a Kawana Health Campus.

Mr Newman said the project would also stimulate the state's employment sector, with 2,000 jobs expected to be created during the construction phase alone.

New health services to be provided by the facility will include neurosurgery, maxillofacial and cardiothoracic surgery, as well as a comprehensive cancer centre.
