QLD residential property owners receive flood assistance

April 03, 2012

Residential property owners in far north Queensland who were affected by heavy rainfall and flooding last month will now be able to receive access to disaster relief funding from state and federal governments.

According to Queensland deputy premier and minister for state development, infrastructure and planning Jeffrey Seeney, total damage estimates for Etheridge Shire Council and Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC) had not yet been confirmed.

Etheridge Shire is located at the base of Cape York Peninsula, while the NPARC incorporates the communities of Seisia, Bamaga, Umagico, Inginoo and New Mapoon, and is generally considered to be the gateway to the Torres Strait islands.

Disaster relief funding has been activated for both communities in an effort to help with recovery costs and the situation will continue to be monitored by Emergency Management Queensland, as well as district and local disaster management groups.

Seeney said: "The Commonwealth and Queensland governments are committed to supporting councils and communities through the disaster recovery process."

Last week, disaster relief funding was also activated for a number of other Queensland council areas - including Gladstone, Cairns and Rockhampton Regional Councils - after heavy rainfall and flooding on March 27.
