Melbourne cycle route improvements to increase safety

June 26, 2012

The cycling commute into Melbourne city is set to become safer and more efficient with the completion of a $219,000 revamp of biking facilities.

The improvements will benefit up to 1,500 cyclists who use the designated biking routes during peak hours in the Fitzroy, Clifton Hill and CBD areas.

With cycling set to become safer and easier, those living in residential property around these areas may be interested in starting a bicycle commute as an alternative to public transport.

Victorian minister for roads Terry Mulder said the completed works would increase cyclist safety with new cameras that provide an early start at traffic lights for those on bicycles.

Facility upgrades, including linemarking, green pavement and bicycle storage boxes were also part of the project.

"VicRoads is trialling new cameras at the Alexandra Parade, Johnston Street and Gertrude Street intersections to detect cyclists and activate an early start at the traffic lights for cyclists," Mr Mulder said yesterday (June 25).

The upgrade is an addition to the state government's $10 million allocation for bicycle infrastructure, which will include funding for Melbourne Bike Share, improvements to the cycle path at Gardiners Creek and the extension of Federation Trail.
