Julia Gillard makes statement of remembrance for Christchurch

February 24, 2012

Wednesday (February 22 2012) marked the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Christchurch and changed the New Zealand city forever.

185 people lost their lives, many more were injured and all residents were somehow affected by the day's events.

Prime minister Julia Gillard posted a statement of remembrance to honour the city: "Christchurch is again in our thoughts, our sorrow and grief undiminished, our respect never greater."

When it comes to natural disasters like this one, citizens often band together, become stronger and prepare for a safer future. It is also a reminder to take care in building structurally sound dwellings in safe areas.

As with the recent floods in Australia, people make different choices about how to protect their residential property. Some choose to live in high-elevation areas that are away from flood-prone zones. Others go to great lengths to ensure their property is as flood-proof as possible.

It is also important to have up-to-date insurance on your property - just in case. Nature reminds us all to expect the best but prepare for the worst.
