Birds encouraged back to Surry Hills

April 04, 2012

If you are looking for a rental property in a Sydney suburb with a strong sense of community and a love of nature, Surry Hills may be a destination well worth considering.

Residents of all ages who love nature will benefit from a new Sydney City Council initiative that aims to encourage birds back to the area.

Artist Peter Day, who painted the community's Where's Wally?- style mural titled What Bird is That? In 1981 was recently called back to Surry Hills to revive the community artwork.

The mural shows a total of 39 native Australian birds hidden within a bush-style backdrop. Three decades of wear and tear had left it looking tired and damaged, but the original artist was able to bring it a new lease of life.

Moore asserts that along with the made-over mural, efforts will be made to re-introduce local plants to Surry Hills in support of local wildlife.

She said: "We plan to replace exotic plants nearby with indigenous Australian plants to encourage birds to return to the area."

Units in Surry Hills, according to RP Data, have a median asking rent of $500 per week, while the median asking rent for houses is $750.

The area is particularly popular with professional couples - the average household size is two - and the local population totals 24,628.
