Solar energy savings in the home
The Australian government's Clean Energy Regulator last week (April 5) released figures showing that more than one million households have installed solar voltaic panels.
The government has made a commitment to the Renewable Energy Target, aiming for at least 20 per cent of Australia's electricity sources to be renewable by 2020.
Home owners are installing solar energy alternatives, and in the process, saving some half a billion dollars annually across the country, according to the Australian Clean Energy Council.
The council's chief executive David Green said this means that over 2.5 million Australians live in residential properties with solar panels on the roof, and that "the solar industry [has] gone from the domain of backyard enthusiasts to a major business opportunity within a decade."
As at April 8 2013, Western Australia's Mandurah post code of 6210 is leading Australia with 6,503 installations, according to Energy Matters.
As well as helping the national power grid cope with periods of high demand, property owners can save on their electricity bills in the long term, benefit from governmental incentives for installation, and be part of the 2020 Renewable Energy Target.
