Flight noise changes could impact Sydney residential property prices
The National Airports Safeguarding Advisory Group (NASAG) has reportedly been discussing whether or not to implement a review of the way that aircraft noise is dealt with in New South Wales.
Currently, the Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) prohibits the building of new residential property developments within a certain area close to the airport.
However, the real estate industry group Urban Taskforce says that it is particularly concerned that plans to expand on the current measures - known as the N70=10 noise contour - could have an impact on the housing situation across the city.
Chief executive of the property interest organisation Chris Johnson said that any plans by NASAG to expand the noise corridors could reduce the opportunity for new development and have an impact on existing dwellings.
Johnson asserted: "The Urban Taskforce has had highly respected acoustic engineers Wilkinson Murray examine the implications of this new measure on the area around Sydney Airport. The new N70=10 noise contour they have mapped extends the unacceptable area by 93 square kilometres.
"This could lead to thousands of existing homes becoming devalued through having an unacceptable noise zone listed on their land title."
