Regional Queensland receives $495m cash boost

July 04, 2012

Residents living in Queensland rural property may be set to benefit with the government's recent announcement of almost $500 million funding for critical infrastructure in parts of the state.

Queensland minister for local government David Crisafulli said the $495 million funding boost would provide essential infrastructure for communities under pressure from the growing mining industry.

The mining boom in the Sunshine State has caused a surge in demand for local services and pressure on vital infrastructure such as roads.

Mr Crisafulli said: "We want to make sure all Queenslanders share in the spoils of the mining boom.

"Unfortunately, some councils are struggling to keep pace with the unprecedented demand for services and infrastructure. This fund will help them start to turn that around."

Under the Royalties for Regions scheme councils located in mining regions can apply for funding for community infrastructure and road improvements.

With increased amenities and infrastructure in regional towns, those looking at buying land in rural Queensland may be interested in the developments.

Councils eligible for funding include: Townsville, Whitsunday, Mount Isa, Maranoa, Western Downs, Toowoomba, Banana, Cloncurry, Central Highlands, Barcaldine, Gladstone, Mackay, Maranoa, Isaac and Rockhampton.
