Navigating building codes in Western Australia

March 30, 2012

One of the great joys in life is finding or building your perfect dream home. If you are in the process of buying land for your new house, you are probably fantasising about the amazing features you will have in your future home.

While it is great to let yourself get carried away just a little bit, there are many practical details to consider, including securing loans, finding contractors and learning about building codes.

In Western Australia, compliance with local building laws may have just got a lot simpler with the modernisation of the state's building industry as it comes into effect on April 2 2012.

Building Act 2011 intends to streamline the sometimes complicated process of getting appropriate permits and determining residential property conveyances.

Minister for finance, commerce and small business Simon O'Brien described the new framework as flexible and effective.

"This is a significant milestone for Western Australia’s building industry and of course those people building new homes.

"Outdated laws of more than 50 years standing are being replaced with modern and sustainable systems to benefit everyone," he said.
