Plenty of jobs in Darwin, Northern Territory

February 17, 2012

Since the global economic slowdown, employment has been tough to find for some Australians. For those looking for work, the Northern Territory's recent announcements may come as good news.

The Darwin area has so many unfilled skills and labour positions for large projects that a new migration program has been created to help fill them.

Minister for immigration and citizenship Chris Bowen and Northern Territory deputy chief minister Delia Lawrie announced today (February 17) that they have begun negotiating on Australia’s first Regional Migration Agreement (RMA) for the Top End of the Northern Territory.

Mr Bowen said: "Darwin is set to experience huge growth, with demand for workers expected to outstrip local and national supply."

Ms Lawrie also declared that the Northern Territory has the second lowest unemployment rate in Australia at 4.2 per cent, a full ten per cent below the national figure.

Australians looking to relocate may consider residential real estate in the Northern Territory, as employment opportunities and recent investments into health, education and infrastructure attract newcomers to the area.

Ms Lawrie said: "In tough global conditions, our economy continues to perform, keeping Territorians in jobs with a 2.8 per cent increase in full time employment compared to January 2011."
