Sydney laneway receives makeover

June 21, 2012

The completion of a five-month major overhaul of Sydney's iconic Albion Place was celebrated in style with an unveiling ceremony on June 18.

The revamped inner city lane, which was the centre of live music and celebration at its official opening this week, may attract the interest of business owners looking for commercial property in the area.

As a part of the City of Sydney's $9 million Laneways Revitalisation Strategy, the Albion Place makeover included installation of new lights, climbing vines and seats.

Lord mayor Clover Moore said the refurbishments injected new life into the area and paid homage to the laneway, which was once located next to Sydney's top entertainment precinct.

"Albion Place has returned to its former glory and is once again a laneway that will encourage people to slow down, admire the new surroundings and even stop for a drink or bite to eat at one of the restaurants opening up along the lane," Ms Moore said.

During its heyday from the 1930s through to 1970, the laneway, which links George and Kent Streets, was located in Sydney's top entertainment quarter with the George Street cinema complex and the Torcadero dance and concert hall in close proximity.
