A multi-million dollar community project earmarked for south-east Melbourne will benefit local residents with increase services in the region.

People living in residential property around the Dandenong area are likely to welcome the development of a $7.5 million library in the town-centre.

With a funding boost of $1.2 million from the state government, the project will provide the community with modern library facilities, including improved technology services.

Minister for local government Jeanette Powell recognised the importance of libraries and its part in a community.

She commented: "Modern libraries offer something for virtually everyone no matter their age or background and this new library and community gathering space will quickly become a valuable asset for the Dandenong community."

The project, which is partly funded through the government's $17.2 million state-wide initiative to upgrade and improve public libraries, will also include additional literacy programs at the public facility.

"Libraries are important meeting places and this new facility will more than double the current floor space from 1,100 sq m to 2,293 sq m and will now provide meeting rooms, an additional community space, business facilities as well as catering for the activities of volunteers," Ms Powell explained.
