However, while there are a number of drawcards for building your own house, there are also some downsides - including nuisance red tape that can make it a long drawn out process.
The New South Wales government has recognised the challenges that face new home builders, after proposing changes to simplify the system.
Under the planned reforms, new housing development approvals will be acquirable within just ten days.
"We need to cut through red-tape and fast-track simple development applications in order to get new housing built as quickly as possible," state minister for planning and infrastructure Brad Hazzard said.
The changes would also see privacy provisions for private residences strengthened, building single-storey detached studios at the back of properties permitted and privacy screens required for second storey windows.
"The O'Farrell government's reforms will require neighbours within 50 metres to be given notification five days before a certifier is able to approve the development," Mr Hazzard added.
