The New South Wales government is establishing a new housing office to help deliver more residential property options in urban renewal areas.

The Housing and Infrastructure Delivery Office will monitor the supply of real estate across the state, more efficiently managing growth and urban sprawl as a result.

State minister for planning and infrastructure Brad Hazzard said the new unit will benefit thousands of NSW residents, engaging with communities to meet real estate demands.

"The government is in the process of overhauling the NSW planning system, moving from a complex, over-regulated system to a simple, strategic and more flexible one focused on outcomes and orderly growth," Mr Hazzard explained.

"These reforms will ensure the community is better engaged in changes to their regions and local areas with planning becoming easier to understand, more transparent and easily accessible online."

The new department will also improve planning priority systems and ensure that community and business concerns are responded to promptly and efficiently.

Key features of the unit include improvements to community and industry engagement, the delivery of long-term rural and regional strategies and the fast-tracking of development approvals.
