People take all sorts of factors into account when it comes to deciding which residential property to rent or buy - including the provision of open spaces.

Perth could therefore become a destination of choice for first home buyers, as it has been applauded by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) for the quality of its open areas.

The city was celebrated in light of its strategies to improve health and wellbeing through making physical activity more accessible to the public.

Lord mayor Lisa Scaffidi explained that the city was thrilled to have been acknowledged for the work that has been done on its public spaces.

"Over the past couple of years we have worked hard to refresh and enhance areas that were looking a bit dated and in need of a facelift," she explained.

Earlier this month, the City of Perth invited responses to its draft Cycle Plan, which is designed to make the area more cycle-friendly by installing additional routes.

A five-year strategy has been developed to encourage people to consider cycling as part of their everyday trips - this will be achieved by installing more on-road cycle lanes and shared cycle paths.
