For people working in the lucrative mining region of Karratha in Western Australia, the consideration of moving there permanently will be more than likely reflect the quality of public transport, education services and local amenities.

And while this town largely attracts a temporary population due to the resource sector, it may appeal to some as a more long-lasting destination.

The construction of a $7.4 million community centre aimed at boosting entertainment and sports facilities may interest those looking at buying rural property in the Karratha region.

Development of the new Frank Butler Community Centre at Bulgarra Oval will include a number of areas for both outdoor and indoor entertainment, sports, social functions and community meetings.

Regional development minister Brendon Grylls said: "This centre will not only provide better facilities for the local football and sporting clubs, but will also benefit local businesses and community groups."

Construction of the centre is part of a series of community wellbeing projects aimed at boosting Karratha residents' lifestyles and providing greater options for the town's population.

"It's appropriate that this wonderful new facility should incorporate areas for sport and recreation - it's the common thread that binds communities together, particularly in the bush," Mr Grylls commented.
