Residential property dwellers around Sydney's St George area are set to benefit from improved health services as construction on a multimillion dollar medical facility redevelopment kicks-off this month.

State premier Barry O'Farrell said the new emergency department and mental health unit earmarked for St George Hospital would bolster medical services in the region.

"The new $39 million emergency department will be a significant boost for St George Hospital, which has one of the busiest emergency departments in the state," Mr O'Farrell commented.

"Patients are set to benefit from the new state-of-the-art facilities with early works, including a new service centre now under construction, while the relocation of the services centre will make way for the hospital's new emergency department."

Mr O'Farrell said the hospital redevelopment would help support the region's growing and ageing population, catering for an increased number of patients.

The new emergency unit will include a 34-bed adult acute treatment area, 12-bed emergency medical unit for short stay admissions, two safety assessment rooms, eight space ambulance drop off zone and five resuscitation bays.

Early works on the emergency department are expected to begin this month, with its opening scheduled for 2014.
