A major overhaul of the Sydney rail network announced by the NSW government yesterday (June 20) will boost public transport services across the city.

Under the plan titled Sydney's Rail Future, a new fleet of rapid transit single deck trains will be introduced to the network as well as the construction of a new rail line under the harbour and CBD.

With a number of Sydney regions to benefit from the rail network overhaul, people interested in buying residential property may be attracted to the new transport links.

NSW premier Barry O'Farrell said while capacity from areas including south-west and western Sydney would increase by 100,000 people per hour, commuters from the Central Coast, the Illawarra, Newcastle and the Blue Mountains would also benefit from the more efficient network.

"The plan addresses bottlenecks that severely limit the number of trains that can travel into the CBD from the north, west and south during peak periods, meaning more trains per hour for people right across the network and faster trips for intercity customers," Mr O'Farrell explained.
