An international study has found living in a cul-de-sac is good for your health and can even provide a surrogate family for some residents.

Researcher Thomas Hochschild, from Valdosta State University in Georgia, USA, discovered cul-de-sacs created a safe play space for kids and provided a greater sense of community compared with neighbourhoods bisected by busy, through-traffic roads.

He also found cul-de-sacs ‘enhance children’s neighbourhood experiences and create more vibrant neighbourhoods’.
