Affordable housing in Brisbane's south-eastern suburbs received a boost yesterday (February 19), after the state government announced the next stage of the Logan Renewal Initiative.

The scheme, which is a joint venture between the Queensland government and Logan City Council, aims to revitalise social housing in the region as well as bolster the supply of affordable residential properties.

Housing minister Tim Mander said three non-government consortiums have been shortlisted to develop more real estate options in the Logan district.

He commented: "This is about creating mixed communities, providing better support for our tenants and addressing the high density of social housing in certain areas."

The minister went on to say that the project will address a housing shortage in the region by ensuring availability of suitable properties across a range of suburbs.

"The Logan Renewal Initiative will address that by creating mixed communities with a combination of social, affordable and private accommodation," Mr Mander added.

The three organisations include the Brisbane Housing Company and Horizon Housing Company, Mirvac Queensland Limited and Compass Housing Services.

The successful proponent is due to be announced mid-year, with works due to follow thereafter.
