Buying residential property in Sydney is set to become easier, after the New South Wales government unveiled its plan to deliver more than half a million homes across the city over the next 20 years.

Planning and infrastructure minister Brad Hazzard said the draft Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney 2031, released yesterday (March 19), addresses the city's growing population, which is expected to surge 1.3 million by 2031.

"We are delivering infrastructure to support 545,000 new homes in Sydney, releasing new land so families can achieve the dream of owning a home with a backyard," Mr Hazzard explained.

"The NSW government will expand housing in greenfield areas while also renewing established suburbs."

And the new residential real estate will be supported by employment opportunities, the minister said, explaining that the planning initiative also aims to create up to 625,000 new jobs in Sydney.

With Western Sydney earmarked for major growth over the coming years, the planning strategy aims to generate at least half of all new jobs in the region.

The draft report is on exhibition until May 31, with Sydneysiders invited to submit their feedback on the future of the city.
