2011 LJ Hooker Property Investment Management Forum in Cairns.
It may have looked like fun and games from afar but the recent 2011 LJ Hooker Property Investment Management Forum in Cairns tackled some of the most serious issues facing property managers today from dealing with natural disasters, emergencies and drugs to the growing role of social media in property management.
About 300 property managers and principals from LJ Hooker offices around Australia attended the event held at the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns from March 5 to 8.
Conference Convenor Jan Malmstrom said the forum allowed property managers from all over the country to share information and experiences, leaving all attendees better educated and better equipped to deal with issues they face in property management.
"A property manager from Cairns can meet a property manager from Perth and sometimes they have the same problems but deal with them differently. They talked about how they charge fees, increase fees, their way of doing any task, how they're building their rent roll... everyone has something to offer," she said.
Property managers were able to take some wisdom from those who had dealt with the natural disasters that have hit various parts of Australia in recent months.
"The floods and the cyclones were uppermost in everyone's minds. We had people who had gone through that situation from Ipswich, from Emerald, from Tully - all those offices were affected - and yet they came and shared their experiences. We all learnt from their experiences what is important to do in those situations," Ms Malstrom said.
Information was also shared on other serious topics such as how to deal with emergencies including murders and suicide in rental properties.
Cairns Police also briefed attendees on how to recognise drug labs and drug paraphernalia in the properties they manage.
"Unfortunately these matters are part of life and property managers need to be trained on how to deal with them. It is part of being a professional property manager, and you just can't go into the industry and think you are going to know how to cope with these matters," Ms Malmstrom said.
The emergence of social media in property management was also discussed.
"It's important for our property managers to understand the role of social media so that we know how to communicate with younger people, because that's how they live," Ms Malmstrom said.
