Primetime shows like 'The Block' and 'HomeMade' are just two programs among the countless examples of renovation television series that are getting Australians excited about doing up their homes.

Renovation can be a great way to increase your chances of selling your property for a great price, or to make your rental property more attractive to tenants.

But as Master Builders director of housing policy Paul Bidwell explains, while "renovation disasters on reality television may entertain viewers, it’s not funny when your own home is affected by work undertaken by people who are unqualified or inexperienced".

The problem is, these shows require a lot of editing and organising to make a half hour or hour show, and as such, don't show the huge amount of effort going on behind the scenes or the money involved.

This way, people often have a warped sense of reality when it comes to carrying out renovations on their home - either as a project they do themselves without the necessary skills to carry out such tasks, or in hiring a professional who takes more time and money than expected.

Whether you are looking to increase the value of your home or attract tenants, remember to plan your renovation project carefully - with realistic expectations in mind.
