Finally reaching the stage where you can afford to move out on your own is a great feeling to have - whether it be getting out from your parents place or finally breaking away from shared housing, the relief can be extremely gratifying.

Of course, it's not always easy to know exactly what to look for in a new rental property - while experience can be helpful in defining the needs and wants, exploring your options is always a move in the right direction.

It is important to note the amount of space you will need - while singles can often get away with a studio or single bedroom apartment, those of us looking to start or expand a family unit may require more rooms or even a house with a yard.

Structural considerations should also be included in the examination process - while not everyone is a master carpenter or plumber, damaged infrastructure can be hard to deal with once you are on site.

The facilities at a property are also important, as simple additions such as stoves, washing machines and air conditioners can make a difference to energy bills and water usage - not to mention the outlay you need to spend if they need purchasing.
