From trainee to boss: South Coast agent’s career comes full circle

Zoe Hall - LJ Hooker Sussex InletLJ Hooker Sussex Inlet has announced Zoe Hall (pictured) as its new principal and licensee, highlighting the power of traineeships as a pathway into a successful real estate career.

Ms Hall, who grew up in the New South Wales South Coast town, was just 17 when she answered a newspaper advertisement for a junior trainee position, setting her on the course that has now led to taking over the business.

“I had no idea what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go, and it was my mum who encouraged me to apply for the traineeship,” she said.

“I had been taking a course on animal studies, but it really wasn’t my passion. When I started with LJ Hooker, I was introduced to everything from property management to sales, and my confidence and interest in the business started to grow.

“I loved the happiness on people’s faces when finding their next home. It also helped that we have such a great team here; we’ve all been here a long time and get along so well.”

LJ Hooker Head of Network Australia Chris Keating said it is wonderful when a young person trained in the business and is well-known to customers and within the community, takes over operations.

“Succession planning can be challenging in real estate because of the unique way agencies operate, so it is an advantage when someone from within the team can transition into ownership,” he said.

“Zoe has been well prepared to take over the reins of the business, having already filled in several senior positions, including acting licensee. She has grown up on the South Coast, has great market insights and a wonderful way with people.”

Ms Hall has been mentored in her journey to business ownership by retiring principal Deborah Kuczma and former licensee Tina Fernie, who has now relocated to Queensland.

Ms Kuczma believes traineeships offer a wonderful introduction to real estate, particularly in regional areas where there are fewer career options. It is how most of the staff at LJ Hooker Sussex Inlet started in the business.

“When we first met Zoe, she was a very timid teenager; I really didn’t know if she would be able to interact with clients,” she said.

“She was always very competent and slowly started to come out of her shell. By the time Zoe reached her mid-20s had really grown in her independence and showed a flair for leadership. I feel very confident that I’m leaving the business in very good hands and that it will continue to thrive.”

The New South Wales South Coast is a growing market offering affordability for first home buyers, young families and downsizers. Ms Hall will be focusing on expanding their holiday and permanent rental properties management. She is also looking to play an active role in local sports and community sponsorship.

“This is a big step for me, and my mum and dad are so proud of everything I have done,” Ms Hall said.

“Being part of the LJ Hooker feels also like being part of a family, you know that they care about you and are there to support you along the way.”
